From UBC Sauder to Yale: Dual degree student Andy Ran shares snapshots from a new semester

From inside one of the university’s most stunning, cathedral-like libraries to a cookie shop that offers late-night deliveries to satisfy sweet-tooth study breaks.
I arrived in New Haven a few days before orientation. The campus was bustling with activity, every college was preparing for opening day, and the excitement of a new semester was palpable.
The weather was perfect during orientation week. On one of my walks around the Yale campus, I came upon the Harkness Tower. It is over 100 years old, and it reminds me of our own Ladner Clock Tower at UBC.
Insomnia Cookies is located close to campus and it offers warm cookie deliveries late into the night. As I’m sure all UBC Sauder students can relate, this instantly reminded me of the ‘Kristen cookie case’ taught by Professor Tim Huh and Professor Mahesh Nagarajan, where we tried to optimize the operations of two college students selling cookies out of their dorm.

Part of orientation week involved a library tour of the 15 libraries at Yale. To me, the most stunning has to be Sterling Library, which was constructed like a grand cathedral.
As an undergraduate student, whenever I was stressed out during exam season, I would head to The Delly in the Student Union Building (now known as The Nest) for a plate of butter chicken and brownies. Fortunately, I’ve found a Lebanese restaurant that provides comfort foods such as chicken shawarma and all kinds of desserts.
The Yale School of Management building is where I will spend most of my time over the next two semesters. The building surrounds a large courtyard in the middle, where many recruitment and campus events take place.
The cafeteria at the Yale School of Management sells bottled water with the Yale logo. I received this bottle for free along with my name tag, but it is sold at all cafeterias at Yale. I plan to propose a business venture of UBC bottled water to our student council.
During orientation, I proudly introduced myself as a UBC alumnus. I am very grateful to the UBC Sauder faculty and staff who supported me through every step of the application process with Yale.
