Background

Mining remains a fundamental sector in Canada's economy, providing jobs and contributing to regional development. However, the environmental and social impacts necessitate a transition towards sustainable practices. Canada's rich endowment in critical minerals places it at the forefront of the green and digital economy, essential for renewable energy and high-tech applications.

Research Objectives

This study will assess the entrepreneurial dynamics in Canada's sustainable mining sector, focusing on the industry's response to global mineral price fluctuations and its role in the carbon transition. It will analyze the surge in startups that specialize in sustainable mineral exploration and support services, examining the sector's contribution to the Canadian economy. Additionally, the research will explore new employment opportunities in sustainable mining, including the flow of professionals and the motivations driving venture founders and early investors. The study will utilize the Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamics Database to provide insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and entrepreneurs, supporting the pursuit of a resilient and sustainable mining industry.
